IPFS Network Monitoring

IPFS is a peer-to-peer network that finds and transfers data by its content identifier (CID), not by its location. ProbeLab crawls the public Amino DHT to count the nodes and to show which software they run and where they are. We also measure content routing through the DHT and IPNI, Bitswap traffic, public HTTP gateways, the bootstrap nodes and the performance of Kubo.

Network structure, peer distribution, client diversity, and connection patterns analysis across the IPFS network.

Network Size

Network Size

Shows an estimate of the number of unique peers in the IPFS network per week (Monday to Sunday, UTC). The two bars are stacked on top of each other.

  • DHT Servers: the number of unique peer IDs that our Nebula crawler found in the DHT in that week.
  • DHT Clients: the number of unique peer IDs that connected to the IPFS bootstrap nodes in that week, from the logs of these nodes. We do not subtract the DHT servers from this number, so it can also count peers that are in the DHT Servers bar.
  • DHT Server IP Addresses (line): the number of unique IP addresses of the DHT servers that Nebula found in that week.

Unique Agents

Shows the number of unique software agents per week (Monday to Sunday, UTC). Bootstrappers counts the agents of the peers that connected to the IPFS bootstrap nodes, from the logs of these nodes. DHT counts the agents of the peers that our Nebula crawler found in the IPFS DHT, for comparison. The software agent strings have not been refined or processed, so each version of a software agent counts as a separate agent.
